WORKSHOP

Rockin’ Locks by Riamor will provide biological/foster/adoptive families of African American or biracial children a safe and comfortable learning environment that will educate each parent in natural curly hair care, best practices in hair management and product usage, and a hands-on learning experience.

Parents will feel a sense of empowerment by learning about the unique characteristics of natural hair, its effect on their child’s mental health, and tricks and tips for daily management. Through hands-on training, they will be equipped with shampooing/conditioning routines, detangling methods, styling techniques, and opportunities to ask the questions they’ve always wanted to know.

Small Class Sizes

Each workshop will be made up of 6-8 participants to allow for personal instruction time, and the opportunity to ask questions.

Supplies

Each participant will have their own natural hair mannequin head for use during the workshop. The mannequin head will be used during the hands-on section of the curriculum giving parents the opportunity to practice methods and techniques discussed and taught throughout the workshop.

 

Each parent will leave with Riamor’s Essentials (Goodie Bag): Wide Tooth Comb, African Parting Tool, Smoothing Brush, Detangling Brush, Styling Cream, Moisturizing Cream, Shampoo and Conditioner, ouchless rubber bands, and satin hair bonnet.

Curriculum Overview

This hands-on workshop has been created to inform, educate, and train parents of African American or Biracial children. Parents will have this time to discuss questions, concerns, and strategies involving natural hair. They will receive instructor training on how to shampoo, condition, detangle, braid, twist, and style. Parents will learn the best natural hair care practices and products to use, routines, and methods.

Each parent will leave this workshop:

  • Knowing more about natural hair

  • With tools to help manage their child’s natural hair

  • How to maintain it on a daily basis

  • How to style natural hair for a special occasion

  • How to help their child understand and appreciate their natural curls

  • Believing in their ability to care for their child’s hair on their own
